The initial foundation of what is today, Porter Simon, Professional Corporation, was formed in 1969. Current partner Jim Porter joined the "country casual" firm in 1973 fresh from graduating with honors from San Francisco's Hastings College of Law.* A few years later Porter met current partner Jim Simon while skiing at one of the local Tahoe resorts. Simon, also a Hastings alum, was working in the litigation department of a large, Oakland firm and jumped at the opportunity to join a more community focused legal environment. They shared a 'work hard, play hard' mentality focused on providing the very best in legal services. Within three years Porter and Simon were partners of the newly structured law firm housed on Commercial Row in charming downtown Truckee.
Our firm has changed and grown over the years shadowing the booming Truckee community. Along the way, the remaining attorneys, Peter H. Cuttitta, Kelley R. Carroll, Steven C. Gross, Brian C. Hanley, Stephen C. Lieberman, and Catherine E. Blaber joined the fray and, combined with Porter Simon's experienced and dedicated staff, have helped to build the Sierra region's largest, most prominent locally-based law firm. A trip down memory lane reveals the many name changes that inspired the Truckee Follies spoof, which ultimately led to the firm's existing name, Porter Simon.
Long-time Tahoe City attorney, Louis A. Basile, joined Porter Simon as a partner in May 2012. Lou has practiced law, focusing on civil litigation and real estate/general business, for 33 years out of his Tahoe City office, and will continue to practice there as a branch of Porter Simon. The addition of Lou, and his experienced staff, provides further depth to our litigation and real estate/general business practice group, and solidifies the firm's reach from Truckee to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.
Attorney Dennis W. De Cuir has joined the firm as of counsel. Dennis brings more than 35 years of experience in the litigation and public law practice areas. His experience includes water and power development projects, power project construction and financing issues, utility franchise, certificate and competitive challenges, and ad valorem property taxation litigation.
All of Porter Simon's attorneys are licensed in California, and six are also licensed in Nevada. Our Nevada licensed attorneys maintain a separate office in Reno, Nevada and handle a variety of civil legal matters, including probate and trust, for Nevada residents and businesses. Our unique, bi-state practice and the experience of our attorneys enables us effectively to represent client and business interests whose transactions cross the State line between Nevada and California. We assist our bi-state clients in their interactions with governmental agencies in both States, and are equipped to address both transactional and litigation matters involving California and Nevada issues.
